Govt. workers, police clash in Kashmir

Indian police scuffle with Public Health Engineering department (PHE) government employees during a protest in Srinagar on May 8,2013.

Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir have clashed with protesting government employees demanding regular pay, Press TV reports.

On Monday, the police used water cannons to disperse the protesters who were also calling for the extension of retirement age in the city of Srinagar.

The clashes broke out after employees of Power Development Department shouted anti-government slogans while marching toward the Civil Secretariat.

Many of the protesters were chased by baton-wielding security forces and taken into police custody.

Reports say that at least two protesters were injured in the clashes.

In May, hundreds of government workers held a protest rally in Srinagar, demanding a pay rise and the regularization of contractual jobs. Indian police arrested dozens of them.

In April, a number of workers were injured in similar protests, organized by the public health engineering department, in the same city.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.
