The leader of Greece™s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn Party, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, is to appear in court on charges of organizing a criminal group.
The leader of the far-right party will appear in court in the Greek capital, Athens, on Wednesday to outline his defense.
Michaloliakos was arrested along with 22 other members of the party in a government crackdown over the weekend.
The far-right party’s spokesman and three parliamentary deputies have already appeared before an investigating magistrate for a hearing.
The government made the arrests following the threats made by Michaloliakos to cripple the country by pulling its lawmakers on Friday.
The crackdown followed intense public anger over the killing of an anti-fascism activist on September 18.
Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old leftist rapper, was stabbed to death by a member of Golden Dawn party outside a café in Keratsini, in the west of the Greek capital, Athens.
Golden Dawn supporter George Roupakias has admitted to stabbing Fyssas on September 18. The far right party however has denied any connection in the killing.
Golden Dawn entered the parliament in 2012 and has been accused of committing several attacks on migrants and political opponents, such as destroying the market stalls of several immigrant merchants.
Meanwhile, two opinion polls published last week showed that the Golden Dawn™s popularity has tumbled since the stabbing, falling to 6.7 or 6.8 percent compared to 14 percent prior to the fatal incident.
