Heavy rains have caused serious flooding in the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa, killing at least six people.

Local media said nearly 12.3 centimeters (about five inches) of rain fell on Peru’s second-largest city during a seven-hour period that began late on Friday.

Officials said three of the victims had been found in their vehicle trapped in high water on a flooded road underneath a bridge.

Police officer Cesar Villegas stated that hundreds of homes had been inundated in the city of about 800,000 residents.

Thousands of people have also been left without electricity and drinking water due to the flooding.

According to regional governor Miguel Guzman, the flooding has destroyed two bridges and cut off several outlying towns.
