Flood kills 13 in northern India

Local buses are stranded in a flooded road in Mumbai, India, June 16, 2013.

Seasonal rains have triggered massive flooding that has killed over a dozen people in Indiaâ„¢s northern hill state of Uttarakhand.

The monsoon rains have also caused heavy damage to houses, roads, bridges and farms in the flood-hit state.

Reports said on Monday that at least 13 people died and over 50 more went missing.

The incident came as heavy downpours have been reported in vast parts of northern and western India, with Uttarakhand and Haryana among the worst-hit states.

At least 30,000 pilgrims have also been stranded in Hindu pilgrimage spots in Kedarnath Valley.

Army helicopters have been sent to Haryana State to rescue people stranded in remote villages.

The monsoon season, lasting from June to October, cause floods with widespread destruction. This year, Indiaâ„¢s monsoon rains are a month ahead of schedule.
