Limite dei collegamenti segreti del IRA di governo rivelatori

Il limite completo di un segreto 20 anni “scanalatura posteriore„ fra il governo britannico e il IRA è rivelato oggi dall'ex capo del personale del Tony Blair, che dichiara che il processo di pace potrebbe mai non essere possibile senza il collegamento. Nel primo cliente autorevole del collegamento da un funzionario britannico, Jonathan Powell dice al guardiano a che gli uomini d'affari di Derry, Brendan Duddy e una serie di ufficiali MI5 e MI6 abbiano rischiato le loro vite per permettere che il governo britannico e la direzione del IRA comunichino in riservato fra 1973 e 1993. Negli ultimi estratti dalle sue memorie, pubblicate nel guardiano questa settimana, Powell scrive: “Per i governi democratici è molto duro ammettere alla comunicazione con gruppi del terrorista mentre quei gruppi sono gente tranquilla del innocent di uccisione. “Fortunatamente per questo processo, la scanalatura posteriore del governo britannico al IRA provvisorio era stata in atto quando richiesto dal 1973 in poi.„ Il collegamento segreto è stato usato soltanto in tre occasioni importanti: per negoziare un cessate il fuoco del IRA nei mid-1970s; durante il primo colpo di fame del IRA in 1980; e nelle fasi iniziali del processo di pace negli anni 90. Ma Powell scrive che il fatto semplice che un collegamento ha esistito dal IRA che la direzione alla via scolantesi - pricipalmente via Duddy ed il suo MI6 alimentatore Michael Oatley - era di importanza enorme. Powell scrive: “, Metaphorically, è stato contenuto in una scatola locked, la chiave a cui era nel possesso di Brendan Duddy e dietro quale, dovunque sembrasse essere nel mondo, era Oatley, conosciuto al IRA come Climber della montagna del `'.„ Il collegamento ha analizzato in 1993 in cui Martin McGuinness, Sinn F? nel negoziatore principale, reagito furiously ai reclami che aveva trasmesso un messaggio presumibilmente che dice che i IRA “conflitto è eccedenza„. But Powell reveals in his memoirs that 10 years later the DUP established its own secret channel to Sinn F?in when Paisley’s party won the elections to the Northern Ireland assembly of 2003. The channel was kept secret because the DUP refused to meet Sinn F?in at the time on the grounds that the IRA was still active. Powell says: “They [the DUP] were no different from the British government at the time of John Major or Margaret Thatcher saying they never had contacts with the IRA - but actually [they were] doing so as well. It did play an important role in making possible that extraordinary meeting between Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams. They had never met, they had never spoken until they sat down for that photo-opportunity in March 2007.
