Grado de los acoplamientos secretos de IRA del gobierno revelados

El grado completo de un secreto 20 años “canal trasero” entre el gobierno británico y el IRA es revelado hoy por el jefe de personal anterior de Tony Blair, que declara que el proceso de la paz pudo nunca haber sido posible sin el acoplamiento. En la primera cuenta autoritaria del acoplamiento de un funcionario británico, Jonatán Powell dice a guarda que los hombres de negocios de un Derry, Brendan Duddy, y una serie de los oficiales MI5 y MI6 arriesgaran sus vidas para permitir que el gobierno británico y la dirección de IRA se comuniquen en privado entre 1973 y 1993. En los extractos más últimos de sus memorias, serializadas en el guarda esta semana, Powell escribe: “Es muy duro que los gobiernos democráticos admitan a hablar con los grupos del terrorista mientras que esos grupos son gente inmóvil del innocent de la matanza. “Afortunadamente para este proceso, el canal trasero del gobierno británico al IRA provisional había sido en existencia siempre que esté requerido del 1973 hacia adelante.” El acoplamiento secreto fue utilizado solamente en tres ocasiones importantes: para negociar un alto el fuego de IRA en los mediados de los años setenta; durante la primera huelga de hambre de IRA en el an o 80; y en los primeros tiempos del proceso de la paz en los años 90. Pero Powell escribe que el hecho simple de que un acoplamiento existió del IRA que la dirección a la calle que tragaba - principalmente vía Duddy y su MI6 tratante Michael Oatley - estaba de significación enorme. But Powell reveals in his memoirs that 10 years later the DUP established its own secret channel to Sinn F?in when Paisley’s party won the elections to the Northern Ireland assembly of 2003. The channel was kept secret because the DUP refused to meet Sinn F?in at the time on the grounds that the IRA was still active. Powell says: “They [the DUP] were no different from the British government at the time of John Major or Margaret Thatcher saying they never had contacts with the IRA - but actually [they were] doing so as well. It did play an important role in making possible that extraordinary meeting between Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams. They had never met, they had never spoken until they sat down for that photo-opportunity in March 2007.
