Bullets target Pakistani police official

Pakistani security members are pictured at the site of a car bombing in the southern city of Sukkur on July 24, 2013.

Gunmen have attacked the vehicle transporting the deputy commander of Frontier Reserve Police in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, injuring the official and killing two others.

Pakistani officials said the assailants seriously wounded Gul Wali Khan and killed his bodyguard and driver in city of Peshawar on Thursday.

Å“The deputy commander of Frontier Reserve Police Gul Wali Khan was going to his office from home when four people on two motorbikes lay in wait on both sides of the road,” said police official Imran Shahid.

Å“They opened fire on his vehicle. His bodyguard and his driver have been killed,” Shahid said.

A hospital spokesman, Jamil Khan, also said that doctors were trying to save Gul Wali Khanâ„¢s life as he sustained multiple bullet wounds.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the shooting.

The attack came hours after gunmen and car bombers attacked an office of Pakistanâ„¢s premier intelligence agency in the southern town of Sukkur, sparking a shootout that left seven people dead.

Militants have carried out numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces as well as civilians, and managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country, despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani army.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001. Thousands more have also been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy in the country.
