British PM meets Bahraini dictator

British Prime Minister David Cameron was entertaining Bahraini dictator King Hamad al-Khalifa in Downing Street, local media reported.

No details of the meeting and talks between the two have emerged except a brief statement made by a No 10 spokesman, who said Å“Cameron reiterated Britainâ„¢s support for ongoing political reform in Bahrain”

Å“The Prime Minister also encouraged His Majesty to continue to demonstrate substantive progress in all areas”, the statement said.

The meeting was held a week ahead of planned demonstrations by pro-democracy campaigners in London protesting against the ruling dictatorship of the tiny Persian Gulf island nation.

Human rights groups across Britain and the world have so far condemned Bahraini dictatorâ„¢s brutality in the past two years against peaceful demonstrations calling for freedom of expression and an elected government in their country.

On Tuesday, before flying to London, the Bahraini dictator amended a law on public gatherings, banning protests in the capital, Manama, and elsewhere in the country.

King Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa issued a new decree, which modified the law on public gatherings to “ban organizing protests, rallies, gatherings or sit-ins in Manama, with the exception of sit-ins outside (offices of) international organizations” held with written police authorization, media reports said.

Bahrainis have been peacefully demonstrating since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform.

The demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling al Khalifa regime following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores have been killed, many of them under torture while in custody, and thousands more detained since the popular uprising began in the country.
