The British Foreign Office has announced it was aware of a “potential threat” against the country’s embassy in Tripoli, Libya.
“We are aware of reports of a potential threat against the British embassy in Tripoli and we are liaising closely with the Libyan government,” a foreign Office spokesperson said on Monday.
“There is no change to our travel advice, we still recommend against all but essential travel to Tripoli.”
The Foreign Office said it was working with the Libyan government in response to the unspecified threat against the British embassy.
Libyan officials, however, said they were not aware of such reports cited by the British embassy.
“The British embassy has not informed us of any threats towards it and there has been no coordination between us,” Libya’s Deputy Interior Minister Omar al-Khadrawi told Reuters.
This comes days after London urged British nationals to evacuate the eastern city of Benghazi due to a ‘specific, imminent threat’ against westerners.
Fears over the safety of British nationals in Africa have been highlighted after the attack on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria claimed the lives of six Britons.
