Egypt’s army says it has killed 60 militants in the volatile Sinai Peninsula in the month since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.

Army spokesman Colonel Ahmed Ali announced the figures Wednesday on his official Facebook page, Reuters reported.

He also said that an additional 64 militants were injured and over 100 arrested in the Sinai campaign between July 5 and August 4.

Earlier in the day, unknown assailants shot and killed Mubarak-era parliamentarian Abdel Hamid Selmi near a mosque in El-Arish, North Sinaiâ„¢s main town.

Militants in the region have stepped up attacks against security forces and other targets since July 3, when the Egyptian army ousted Morsi in a coup.

Around 40 people, many of whom members of the security forces, have been killed in Sinai in the month, according to medical officials.
