This is an excellent article. The need for true patriots to serve in the military is multiplied by the rise of private contracting firms.

The private ranks are filled with some of America's best former military people and many special operations personnel, lured away from public service by money.

Private contractors have less oversight than the standing military and greater opportunities to influence the political, financial and religious thinking of those within their ranks.

To the extent the emperor fails to harness the public military to his desire, private contractors and their lobbyists, especially those with close fraternal ties at the top of the public military (and Congress?), may suffice to keep the people in check.

We need true patriots in the ranks to check their superiors, to become superior, and to cow their private sector brethren on behalf of America and her citizens.

Although I agree with you about the value of the all volunteer military and the need of the people of the United States to take more involvement in the nation's business, I find your conclusions regarding Northern Command and the positioning of US troops to assist law enforcement where appropriate to be inconsistent and not well thought out.

You note that before 1876, the US did position troops to assist law enforcement. As a matter of fact, troops ran Abraham Lincoln's assassin to ground, and troops arrested John Brown at Harper's Ferry. Are we to believe that the arrest of John Brown at Harpers Ferry by US Marines accompanied by JEB Stuart and commanded by Robert E. Lee demonstrated a "War Department vs. America" situation?

Ridiculous.
