The 15 February 2003 demonstration reminds us of the strength of the anti-war movement and shows the importance of the upcoming 15 March protest, writes Andrew Burgin 15 شباط / فبراير 2003 تظاهرة يذكرنا قوة للحركة المناهضه للحرب ويبين اهمية المقبلة في 15 آذار / مارس احتجاجا ، ويكتب اندرو Burgin

The fifth anniversary of the great anti-war march of 15 February 2003 was celebrated by the anti-war movement last week, as a high point of a truly unique mass movement that brought millions of people into political activity and ultimately led to the downfall of Tony Blair. الذكرى الخامسة للالعظيم المناهضه للحرب فى 15 شباط / فبراير اذار / مارس من عام 2003 احتفل بها الحركة المناهضه للحرب في الاسبوع الماضي ، باعتباره ذروه فريدة حقا حركة جماهيرية هي التي جلبت الملايين من الناس في النشاط السياسي ، وأدت في نهاية المطاف الى سقوط توني بلير.

The anniversary was also marked by the mass media – which gave a somewhat mixed appraisal of the day. ذكرى كما تميز وسائل الاعلام -- التي تعطي نوعا من التقييم مختلطه اليوم.

One has to admire the Guardian newspaper for its chutzpah – on the anniversary the paper devoted a section of its editorial in praise of the march. على المرء ان نعجب لصحيفة الغارديان chutzpah -- بمناسبه ذكرى الورقه كرست قسما من التحرير في الثناء من اذار / مارس.

Not mentioned was the paper’s own support for the Iraq war nor its previous editorial position of not covering marches at all. لم تذكر الورقه هو نفسه الدعم لحرب العراق ولا الى قراراته السابقة التحرير موقف لا تغطي على جميع المسيرات.

Nevertheless times change and now not only is the march to be considered as a wonderful event but we were also treated in the same edition to a long article on the march from quirky Guardian journalist, John Harris. ومع تغير الزمن وليس الآن فقط هو مارس الى اعتبار الحدث الرائع ولكن كنا أيضا في التعامل معه بنفس الطبعه طويلة الى المادة على المسيره من quirky الوصي الصحافي جون هاريس.

That the Guardian devoted a substantial section of their G2 supplement to the march is to be applauded and it is always good to see the photographs of the march – they show the incredible size and breadth of the anti-war movement that is difficult to express in words alone. ان الوصي خصص قسم كبير من G2 ملحق لشهر اذار / مارس هو الثناء وانها دائما جيدة لرؤية الصور من اذار / مارس -- ليظهروا لا تصدق حجم واتساع نطاق الحركة المناهضه للحرب التي يصعب التعبير الكلمات وحدها.

The article itself is a different matter. المادة نفسها أمر مختلف. The main question Harris asks about the march is rather bizarre. والسؤال الرئيسي المطروح هاريس يسأل عن شهر اذار / مارس هو بالأحرى غريب. He says, “Britain had never before seen a public outcry like it. ويقول : "لم يحدث من قبل ان بريطانيا قد شهدت ضجه الجمهور يعجبنا. So why haven’t we seen one again since?” فلماذا لم نشاهد مرة اخرى منذ واحد؟ "

He states that the march and the movement which built it “failed to develop into anything with real political oomph”. ويذكر انه في اذار / مارس والذي بنيت عليه حركة "فشلت في الوصول الى اي شيء سياسي حقيقي مع oomph".

Effects تأثيرات

You don’t have to agree completely with former Chinese prime minister Zhou Enlai – who when asked in the 1970s to comment on the effects of the French Revolution, said that it was “too early to tell” – to believe that the effects of the largest demonstration in many hundreds of years of British political history may still be playing itself out. ليس لديك لنتفق تماما مع رئيس الوزراء السابق الصينية زهو enlai -- الذين عندما سئل في السبعينات التعليق على آثار الثورة الفرنسية ، وقال انه "من السابق لاوانه الحكم" -- الى الاعتقاد بأن آثار لل أكبر مظاهرة فى عدة مئات من السنين من التاريخ السياسى البريطانى قد لا يزالون يلعبون بها نفسها.

After all British and US troops remain in Iraq and are now even more heavily engaged in Afghanistan than they were in 2003. بعد كل القوات الامريكية والبريطانية في العراق وتبقى هي الان اكثر منهمكه بشدة فى افغانستان مما كانت علية فى عام 2003.

Harris rips the march from the movement which created it and tears it from what came before and what came after. هاريس الاشخاص الفاسدون في اذار / مارس من الحركة التي خلقها والدموع وهو ما جاء من قبل وما جاء بعد.

Rather than 15 February 2003 being seen as the high point in a long campaign against the “war on terror” Harris reduces the march to an isolated event which fell into the laps of the organisers by chance. بدلا من 15 شباط / فبراير 2003 ان ينظر اليه باعتباره النقطه العالية في حملة طويلة ضد "الحرب على الارهاب" هاريس يقلل من اذار / مارس الى حدثا منعزلا التي سقطت في الاحضان من منظمي بالصدفه.

The organisers, he says, soon managed to whittle away this with “crushingly unimaginative tactics”. الجهات المنظمه ، ويقول : لم تلبث ان تمكنت من انجر بعيدا مع هذا "التكتيك بشكل ساحق ضعيف الخيال". Presumably he means by this more marches. ويفترض هذا ، فانه يقصد بها اكثر المسيرات.

Contrast this with Tony Benn’s approach – “The Stop the War movement is the most powerful and influential popular political movement of my lifetime and possibly of any period of our history.” على النقيض من هذا مع توني بن نهج -- "ان وقف الحرب هو الحركة الأقوى نفوذا وشعبية حركة سياسية من حياتي ، وربما من اي فترة من تاريخنا."

It is not a question of the honour of the movement or a question of defending the role of the SWP, which is criticised in the article, in building the anti-war movement, but the necessity of recognising the historic importance of this campaign – a campaign which still has some way to travel. انها ليست مسألة شرف للحركة او سؤال من الدفاع عن دور للswp ، الذي انتقد في المادة ، في بناء الحركة المناهضه للحرب ، ولكن ضرورة الاعتراف الاهميه التاريخية لهذه الحملة -- الحملة التي لا تزال لديها بعض طريقه الى السفر.

The marches are the backbone of our movement but they represent only a small part of our day to day activity. هذه المسيرات هي العمود الفقري لحركتنا ولكنها لا تمثل سوى جزء صغير من يومنا هذا الى يوم النشاط.

Later this month the Stop the War Coalitions begins a series of nationwide rallies with Hassan Jumaa of the Iraqi oil workers’ union. في وقت لاحق من هذا الشهر في وقف الحرب ائتلافات يبدأ سلسلة من الاجتماعات مع حسن جمعة من النفط العراقي الاتحاد العمالي. We have worked closely with the Military Families Against the War campaign to support their demand for a public inquiry. وقد عملنا عن كثب مع عائلات العسكريين ضد الحرب حملة لدعم طلبهم لاجراء تحقيق علني.

We have held a series of international peace conferences which have brought activists from across the world together to campaign against the “war on terror”. لقد عقدنا سلسلة من مؤتمرات السلام الدولية التي اوصلت ناشطات من جميع أنحاء العالم معا من اجل حملة ضد "الحرب على الارهاب".

There have been days of action against Islamophobia, in defence of civil liberties and opposing an attack on Iran. وكانت هناك أيام العمل ضد الاسلام ، في الدفاع عن الحريات المدنيه والمعارضة هجوما على ايران. We have worked with artists and others to create events and exhibitions opposing the war. لقد عملنا مع الفنانين وغيرها من اجل اقامة الأحداث والمعارض الذي يعارض الحرب.

And there has been much more – not least a campaign of direct action including sit-downs, banner drops and strikes and school walk-outs. وكان هناك الكثير من اكثر -- لا تقل عن حملة من العمل المباشر بما في الاعتصام هبوطا ، لافتة قطرات والاضرابات والمدرسة مشيا عن البيع.

Lies and deceit الاكاذيب والخداع

Where John Harris does hit the mark is in his account of the gap between the politicians (those who began the war) and the people (those who opposed it) and who exposed the lies and deceit that were used to promote it. جون هاريس حيث لا تصل الى العلامه في حسابه من الفجوه بين السياسيين (الذين بدأت الحرب) والشعب (تلك عارضوه) والذي فضح الاكاذيب والخداع التي استخدمت في الترويج له.

This week the government was forced to reveal the first draft of the “dodgy dossier” – and we will see the full extent of the “sexing up” of the intelligence by Tony Blair and Alistair Campbell. وهذا الاسبوع اضطرت الحكومة الى الكشف عن المسوده الاولى لل"dodgy ملف" -- وسنرى المدى الكامل لل"sexing يصل" للاستخبارات من جانب تونى بلير واليستير كامبل.

We are in the middle of a long campaign to bring these politicians to account and to bring all the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. ونحن في خضم حملة طويلة لتقديم هؤلاء الساسه لحساب وعرض جميع القوات الى الوطن من العراق وافغانستان.

This is why we make no apology for calling for people to work as hard as possible to build the international day of action and the London and Glasgow demonstrations on Saturday 15 March. وهذا هو السبب في اننا لا تدعو للاعتذار للشعب على العمل بجد لبناء ممكن باليوم الدولي للعمل ولندن وغلاسغو مظاهرات يوم السبت 15 آذار / مارس.

The movement remains mobilised. ولا تزال الحركة تعبئتها.
